Are You Happy in Your Current Role?

Are you happy in your current role?

Recent studies have found that less than a third of people in the UK are currently happy in their workplace the majority of the time. So why is there such a lack of candidates in the recruitment market at the moment?

Since the start of the pandemic, work-life balance, mental health, and working from home have become terms that have taken over the recruitment industry. Candidates are now much more specific about what they expect from a new workplace, such as support with anxiety and depression, shorter commutes, the opportunity to work remotely, higher salaries and even a 4-day work week. The effect of the pandemic on job security also means that even when people are unhappy with their current jobs, they may be wary about joining a new company.

What is the solution?

For those of us in recruitment, it has been difficult to source candidates due to skill shortages in the UK, so how should companies overcome this?

Research has found that the number of businesses with mental health support procedures for employees has increased by 10% since before the pandemic. Although progress is being made, it’s still only 42% of companies who have these measures in place. Candidates are becoming fatigued due to stressful workloads with limited acknowledgement or praise from employers, weekends are now becoming less about enjoying ourselves and more about recovering from exhausting work weeks. Support for burnout is lacking across the UK, and employees are still not confident in talking to senior staff about any issues whether in the workplace or at home.

Businesses across the UK need to implement new strategies for dealing with employee burnout, such as offering remote working, regular catch ups with staff about progression and goals, and even encouraging more conversations about satisfaction/fulfilment at work in order to maintain quality and productive workforces.

In turn, embracing flexibility with work hours and where staff can work from will improve productivity in your current staff as well as encouraging candidates to take up roles with you. Many people have set boundaries with what they expect from a workplace and won’t return to 50-hour weeks and a lack of work-life balance.
